The annual Chingay Parade took place from Jan 31 to Feb 1,2020, at the F1 Pit Building, with the Eurasian Association (EA) taking part in the parade this year.

The theme for Chingay 2020 is ‘Colours In Harmony’. This year, there was a cultural  fusion dance performance titled “Harmony in Motion” where the different races in Singapore came together to perform. It marked a first for the EA, where they got to perform alongside the different performers from various associations in Singapore.

“Once I realized that it was a culturally fusion act, it became more of a personal level like how it was in me in the 90s where we were all playing downstairs under the void deck, playing catching with the neighbours, regardless of race and religion,” said Natalie Trog, a Chingay participant in her 20s.

When asked on what makes this year’s performance particularly different, Ms Hazel Soe, who doesn’t want to reveal her age, events executive for the EA, said: “This year is more of like being in a multi-ethnic contingent, so there’s Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasians. So this year the PA decided that the Eurasians should also come in and represent the community, so the Eurasians are not in the “others” anymore.”

The EA is a community self-help group that focuses mainly on its three Pillars: Education, Family Support Services and Community Development. These pillars help the Eurasian community in Singapore to advance in their academics, provide guidance and assistance and encourages the Eurasians to participate in different projects and programmes.

“EA brings the small Eurasian community together and that’s what the EA does,” added Ms Soe.

Those who did not have their tickets to the parade, were able to watch it live on Chingay’s website. There were also other thrilling highlights, like the 200m long firecracker which was used as the grand opening and the world’s biggest and longest Flying Dragon.

The audience who attended this year’s Chingay saw many vibrant performances, which also consisted of a grand opening with a 200m long firecracker.
